So it’s January, and with that comes new goals, new journeys and new experiences! For all those new to their fitness journeys, I want to make you feel comfortable in the gym and give you tips to get you started 🙂
New To The Gym? I Got You…
I’ve been in your shoes before. Your first little while in the gym can be scary and disorienting. There are so many areas, pieces of equipment and lots of people grunting and doing crazy-looking things. But, don’t worry! I’m here to show you the ropes and give you that pep talk so you can go smash your fitness and health goals!
1. Research, research, research
Be prepared before you go into the gym. There are a lot of great resources out there to learn a bit about technique and learn a few moves! Instagram is one of my favorite places to learn new exercises because the videos are short and you can save the content to re-watch later. For tips on building workout plans and technique I love Google. There are infinite possibilities on Google. You can find some great sites like bodybuilding.com, or women’s health magazine or blogs like mine! Be a sponge. Absorb as much info as you can so you’re not going into the gym blind, so to speak.
2. Have a plan
Even if it’s as simple as “do 20 mins on the elliptical and finish off with 10 mins of abs and stretching”- a plan can take you far. You won’t look like a lost little lamb when you’re deciding what to do next and you’ll have confidence that you know what your agenda is.
3. Just worry about you, boo boo
Walking into the gym when you’re new is scary. You think everyone is looking at the sign on your forehead that says “I have no idea what I’m doing”. But in all reality, everyone is so consumed by themselves and what they’re doing that they probably won’t even notice you. Just focus on what you’re doing. It will not only make you more comfortable but it’ll make your workout better. Focus on the weights, not on the scary buff guy next to you.
4. It’ll take time
Don’t get mad or frustrated when you don’t get something right off that bat. You’re not going to have perfect squat form and you’re not going to be able to lift as much as everyone else in the blink of an eye. Trust the process. You’ll get to where you want to be, just keep pushing and learn to love the journey.
5. Set a goal
My favorite way to stay focused is to set a goal! It can be as simple as losing 10 pounds, going to the gym 3 days a week or increasing your weight on bicep curls! Pick something that gets you excited and that will make you stay focused on your fitness journey.
